Tour de Whitehorse Wrap-Up

The Sport Men, Women and Expert Women Climb the hill up from the Yukon River Bridge

The Tour de Whitehorse wrapped up on Sunday with some excellent racing and champions crowned in several categories.

On what can only be described as a "most excellent" day champions were crowned in the Tour de Whitehorse Road Race, Yukon Road Race Championships and Tour de Whitehorse General Classification (GC) category.

One of the closest races of the day happened in the Mens Expert event. Racing from Jakes Corner to the Robert Service Way and one loop of Miles Canyon saw eventual winner Elijah Buffalo outsprinting Ian Parker in 2 hr. 11 min. 11 sec. for an average speed over the challenging course of 38.4 km/hr. Aaron Foos was only a few seconds back in claiming third.

Buffalo who also won the Prologue and Time Trial took the GC crown for the Tour de Whitehorse. In addition his wins in the Time Trial and Road race also earned him Yukon Championships.

Second in the GC for the Mens Expert division was Chris Reynolds with Rob Rees taking third.

Trena Irving won the GC title in the Expert Women category claiming first place in each race and along with that earning the title of Yukon Champion in the Time Trial and Road Race.

Other GC winners were Lucas Taggart-Cox in the Youth Boys division, Mollie Fraser in the Youth Girls, Sara Burke-Forsyth in the Sport Women and Ian Hansen in the Sport Men.

A set of Fulcrum high performance wheels was the major draw prize, donated by Icycle Sport, and won by Jody Cox. Jody also raced in all the events and took first in the Women's Recreational Road Race.

Of course none of this is possible without the hard work of volunteers and sponsors -   we therefore would like to acknowledge Bill Curtis, Marg White, Peter Stayley, Donna Jones, Sherillynne Himmelsbach, Sue Richards, Icycle Sport, Cycling Association of Yukon, and the Yukon Government's Highways and Public Works.

Jane Eccles

In 2005, a few days after giving birth, Jane and her family were told she had just hours to live. She had contracted Necrotising Fasciitis (NF) and it was very quickly ripping through her body.

Thankfully their prognosis was not correct, but for Jane this was only the first battle of many. Extensive surgery was required to get rid of the NF, one which involved the removal of her abdominal muscles. As she lay in intensive care, it was becoming clear that her physical ability would never be the same again.
