Family: The Expectation Game

The Expectation Game

Goals can be good. Expectations can be bad, and I have too often mistaken one for the other and failed to achieve either. No where is this more apparent to me than in my parenting. I am not intuitively a good father, and it is a miracle of sorts that my oldest son loves me the way he does and forgives me my trespasses. My first attempt at nurturing hasn't always been the best. I yell. I carry on. Then I apologize, which is only right when you've acted like a jerk.

I was a kid in the '70s, when smacking your children was still widely accepted and 'tough love' was just called 'love.' I sometimes joke with the other parents from the boys' soccer and hockey teams that '70s dad would not have put up with most of what we accept from our progeny today, but I do believe that understanding and love are better than punishment.

Tour de France: Top 10 conclusions from the second week

Froome riding a perfect race, but one that has already been soured

The peloton rounds a bend at the Tour de France

After silencing his doubters and coming through the tough opening week of the Tour de France in the race lead, in between the two rest days Chris Froome has put his foot down and tightened his grip on yellow.

His attack and victory on the first summit finish at La Pierre-Saint-Martin was resounding and he has proved unbreakable since. He heads into the Alps claiming he's in a stronger position than he was at this point during his 2013 Tour win. That must be quite demoralising for his rivals to hear.

I know a lot about this topic. But something new dawned on me the other day. I realised, that in all my years thinking about this issue, I have learned much more about how to get away with doping than how to prevent it.
