How to dope in cycling and get away with it

As an academic researcher, I have studied drugs in society for the last 20 years. In my current job, I also study cycling history and culture, and the place of drugs and doping in this sport.

I know a lot about this topic. But something new dawned on me the other day. I realised, that in all my years thinking about this issue, I have learned much more about how to get away with doping than how to prevent it.

Sadly, it can sometimes seem like doping and other cheating is as fundamental to cycling as the wheels on the bikes themselves.

We love everything about The Aviva Women’s Tour and you will, too

Confession: sometimes it's hard for me to remain completely impartial when covering women's cycling.

Having been part of women's cycling in varied capacities for the better part of a decade, there are certain riders, teams and events that make me fall in love with the sport over and over and over again, and I can't help but cheer for them.

Organiser apologises for bikini-clad podium girls at Belgian women’s race

Lotto Cycling Cup says sorry for the podium presentation at the Flanders Diamond Tour, but distances itself from the organisation of it

The organisers of the Flanders Diamond Tour have apologised after bikini-clad podium girls flanked cyclists in post-race pictures.

The scene was branded an 'utter disgrace' by cyclist Marijn de Vries, who posted the image on Twitter, prompting organiser Lotto Cycling Cup to tweet an apology in which it distanced itself from from the organisation of the podium.

Reports on Twitter claim that the girls were not only present for the podium presentation, but were in fact circulating around the VIP area throughout the race.

The podium presentation stole the limelight, somewhat, from race winner Jolien D'Hoore of Wiggle-Honda in her first race back from a six-week break.

With the eyes of the women's cycling world descending on Britain this week for the Aviva Women's Tour, ITV commentator Ned Boulting insists the podiums here will be a bit more reserved.

Is this the lightest cross-country bike around?

If ever there was a Ferrari of the mountain bike world, this could be it.

Bikes can be likened to cars, there are sturdy, well made tanks that can take a major beating and there are super lightweight whippets that can change direction quicker than a wasp at a window.

Multiple cross-country World Cup and World Champion Nino Schurter's race bike must be both strong enough to take a beating in a rock garden, and light enough to be sprinted up vomit inducing climbs.

We got under the bonnet of Nino's race bike to see what gives him the edge.

In terms of weight, Nino's Scott Spark mountain bike is not a million miles off that of a pro-level road bike, weighing in at an incredible 20.7lb (9.4kg).

As dusk falls in the lush Pennsylvania woods, things are winding down at the NoTubes Trans-Sylvania Epic mountain bike stage race. The awards ceremony and slideshow are over, so racers filter back to their cabins. Birds stop singing and evening quiet envelops the rustic Boy Scout camp. But one pavilion off to the side of the dining hall is still a hub of activity - lights blazing, conversation, occasional clanking and hissing noises. This is where local shop Freeze Thaw Cycles does its mechanical support for the race.

Jane Eccles

In 2005, a few days after giving birth, Jane and her family were told she had just hours to live. She had contracted Necrotising Fasciitis (NF) and it was very quickly ripping through her body.

Thankfully their prognosis was not correct, but for Jane this was only the first battle of many. Extensive surgery was required to get rid of the NF, one which involved the removal of her abdominal muscles. As she lay in intensive care, it was becoming clear that her physical ability would never be the same again.
